We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, across decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or spiritual independents.
