The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.
