A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
